Spitfire Mk 24
I took this shot of a Spitfire Mk 24 in the R.J. Mitchell memorial museum at Southampton. R. J. Mitchell was the designer of the Spitfire at Supermarine Aircraft in Southampton. The museum was started in 1976 in temporary accommodation by a local squadron of the Air Training Corps cadets and their officers. It has since been incorporated in a large purpose-built permanent home together with many other historic aircraft showing the history of some 26 firms in the Southampton area engaged in the aviation industry, with the new museum called Solent Sky. I took this shot soon after the original museum opened. I had a flash with me, but took this by available light, which I prefer to use where possible, even though this was almost an 'against the light' shot. I took a hand held meter reading from the lighter painted part of the fuselage and pondered for some time where to stand to get the best picture among the display cases that stood around the room. While I was doing so this couple came along and climbed up onto the wing to look in the cockpit. I thought they made the picture and took it with my Kiev 4A loaded with FP4.
